“Beyond the Velvet Ropes” Conference

National Trust For Historic Preservation Midwest Regional Office

Heritage Consulting was approached by the Midwest Regional Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation to help them organize a conference for house museum professionals in Wisconsin as a result of her recent book New Solutions for House Museums. The book, published in April 2007 focuses on identifying new uses or users for struggling historic house museums coping with changing demographics, aging board members, no endowments or serious deferred maintenance concerns.

This conference in 2008, designed for the Wisconsin stewards and volunteers who manage approximately 140 historic sites in the state, is designed to bring cutting edge information to volunteers around the state who are responsible for the interpretation and care of a variety of historic properties.

As the conference planner, Heritage Consulting participated in the development of the outline of the conference, was a member of the conference steering committee, prepared drafts of the conference outline, contacted speakers to ascertain their interest and availability, and wrote drafts of the brochure text. Ms. Harris was the featured luncheon speaker for the event held in Wausau Wisconsin in March 2008. This event was sold out weeks before it was held.
