Planning for Interpretation Mt. Zion AME Church Skillman NJ

We conducted an interpretation planning workshop on Saturday, April 15, 2017 for the Stoutsburg Sourland Mountain African American Museum (SSAAM) as part of a Vision Planning Workshop organized by Historic Building Architects.  The SSAAM board members and other guests were excited and enthusiastic about the future of the historic Mt. Zion AME Church in Skillman NJ and its potential as a heritage tourism destination. Twenty-five people participated in our planning for interpretation workshop.

Our workshop included small group exercises designed to gather information from workshop participants about the new organization, its outreach, exhibits, and interpretive programs to be created in the future. The intent of the workshop was to help this new museum to organize this information into incremental interpretation projects so that SSAAM could start work, now that the SSAAM has a lease on the land and building for the next 30 years.  We also provided further recommendations on organizational development topics. The SSAAM Board is impressive and we expect they will expand their educational efforts in the next few months.
