Managing Volunteers
November 3rd from 9:30am-4:00pm
Lebanon, Ohio
Donna Ann Harris
Volunteers are the lifeblood of any downtown revitalization organization. In this daylong workshop with Donna Ann Harris of Heritage Consulting Inc. ,  you will learn how to create and sustain a strong volunteer corps to manage your local Main Street program. We will discuss who and why people volunteer today. During much of the morning session, we will discuss three basic recruitment techniques used across the county in downtown organizations. We will also share some new methods to recruit volunteers using social media tools. You will learn why job descriptions are essential for even the smallest volunteer activity. After lunch, we will focus on training techniques to assure that you retain the volunteers you already have. Finally, we will talk about the most neglected part of the three Volunteer “R’s” –Recognition–including why you must thank volunteers, three times, three ways. We will do three group activities to brainstorm ideas about how to implement aspects of a vibrant volunteer program for your Main Street program. We will collect and send you the results from all the exercises so you can use the ideas from your colleagues at home. You will also receive a CD full of articles, forms and checklists that you can use tomorrow in your town to build your volunteer corp.
